Yet, here we are with another boring entry into the bland-as-hell Indian horror hall of fame, i.e., Adhura.Ĭreated by Ananya Banerjee and Gauravv K. But going by the theatrical success of Evil Dead Rise and the heavily edited The Pope’s Exorcist in India (or at least my town), it showed that we’ve an appetite for good, visceral, and pulpy horror. Tumbbad, Andhaghaaram, and Churuli are the rare exceptions. My issue is with the former, which has led to stuff like Boo, Virupaksha, Gaslight, Blurr, Chhorii, Dybbuk, Boomika, Laxmii, The Priest, Bulbbul, Bhoot Police, Bhoot: The Haunted Ship, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and so many more. I’m okay with the latter, as it has given us Stree, Bhediya, and Tooth Pari. ![]() So, it’s weird that all we’re getting nowadays are half-hearted attempts at supernatural scares or ones that use the genre to send a societal message. Most Indians have grown up watching Ssshhhh…Koi Hai, Aahat, Vikraal aur Gabraal, everything that the Ramsay Brothers made, Ram Gopal Varma’s films (before he became weird), Raaz, and of course, Manichitrathazhu.
